New big wave surfing world record?

I’ve been thinking about giving the new Melbourne wave pool a crack when it reopens. I used to be pretty good. See what I did yesterday? Not.

    • There were very big waves again there this year. Big wave season is Dec-Feb.
For rest of year they can launch fishing boats off the very flat beach behind where the videos are take,
Great place to visit off the main tourist beaten track. Top seafood.

  1. A mate of mine (Sydney based surfer) went to the Melbourne wave pool a couple of times before it closed. Said it took some getting used to but then he thought it was pretty good. Very tiring though.

I had a crack and it’s first rate for learning (consistent waves is the biggest challenge in the ocean when learning and you just get tired before you learn much) and regular surfers like it too but it’s naturally not as good as the real thing on a good day.

  2. Speaking of insolvencies…word on the street is that some private equity raiders pounced on that wave park after the founders cash-flow dried up during COVID … so its now owned by bean counters who wouldn’t catch a wave to save their life!

    • That is sad news if it is true. I think surf wave pools every 100km from Melbourne to Brisbane would be viable after Covid19 is over.

      Here I am.
Tow ins is cheating. Same as steroids is cheating.
Not many years ago would have had a go but would have tried to paddle in with or without success. They never show side on with most big waves as the slope is usually not straight up & down. Some of them have a lot of the wave being a gentle slope although it’s still a big portion of wave that’s steep.
My take is if you can’t pick it up paddling in then let it go. Why do humans a always have to conquer everything at any cost. using machines flotation devices and scuba gear.

      • Old school, boom. Never in doubt.

Agreed 100%. Nothing worse than paddling out on a good day and a few pros getting jet ski assist to get back out to the line up.

ok boom get out there with no leg rope, wettie or swimmers, nor board for that matter and go catch those suckers just as nature intended

Now you’re talking China, been bodysurfing lately before 5.00 am without wetsuit mid Curlie. See you there, you are welcome to join me, we’ll have the whole beach to ourselves.
In the old days you would have to stare down the face of the wave before take off but now they just waterski on a lump and the wave rises up behind them. Without the wave at its critical highest point you couldn’t catch it by paddling in.

Sounds like Boom and Dave, our 2 resident Wax Heads, need a surf off to decide who is the greater Waterman.

Dave can take surfing ability crown, I’ll have the waterman prize.
Was out at the German Banks once and a tow in mob from South Africa, yelled here’s one and took off on a lump that hadn’t even formed yet. In the old days the drop was everything .
