MB busts skills shortage myth on Radio 2GB

Last night I gave an interview on Radio 2GB debunking the notion that Australia has a widespread skills shortage, as often portrayed by the business lobby and government.

The interview begins at around the 1.18 mark and runs to around 1.25.

One point of correction. I said that café managers were part of the top-5 so-called skilled occupations that were not classified as in shortage last financial year. This is wrong. The actual list is as follows:

Accountants (3505)
Software Engineer (3112)
Registered Nurses (1561)
Developer Programmer (1487)
Cook (1257)

Regardless, none of the top 5 skilled occupations last financial year were classified as being in shortage by the government’s own data in any of the past four years, whereas Software Engineer has never been in shortage in the entire 31 year history of the series!

This highlights why the so-called ‘skilled’ migration program is a giant farce.
