Paul Kelly wrote a good piece on the weekend:

Driven by poor polls, the progressive shift in public culture, Bill Shorten’s dark view of Australia’s situation and his radical agenda to recast economic and social policy, the Turnbull government has tried to reboot the battle of ideas.

This is not an easy task. Labor has been given a free political kick for a long time. But for the government it is essential. It is doomed unless it can reshape the contest of ideas now owned by Labor. The key to the Opposition Leader’s success is that his higher tax, bigger spending, anti-business, pro-union ethos is not seen as a threat to prosperity by a majority of people. This is a remarkable event with many meanings.
