Coal shipments out of central Queensland have ground to a complete halt after heavy rain from ex-tropical cyclone Debbie caused the closure of the Port of Gladstone.
Several mines in central Queensland have been left unable to deliver contracted coal shipments with most railways and all ports now closed due to the impacts the huge storm.
Every one of the region’s major coal terminals was closed and railway operator Aurizon was operating only a single coal railway on Thursday morning as some parts of the area were being inspected for damage and others remained bunkered down under torrential rain.
The coal ports Abbot Point, Hay Point and Dalrymple Bay have been closed since the weekend and damage assessments are being conducted.
But the intense rain on Thursday morning caused Maritime Safety Queensland to close the largest coal terminal at the Port of Gladstone, effectively ceasing the region’s coal exports.
