Vic Govt mulls stamp duty for land tax switch

According to Fairfax today, the Victorian Treasury is mulling switching stamp duties for land taxes:
If State Treasury had its way, stamp duty would be consigned to the dustbin (or at least dramatically cut). Economists hate taxes on “transactions”, because they tend to distort behaviour the most and, consequently, impose the biggest economic costs.
