Why Australian housing supply won’t recover

The National Housing Supply and Affordability Council’s (NHSAC) 2026 State of the Housing System report was released last week.
NHSAC significantly lifted its forecast for dwelling construction over the coming years compared to last year’s report and now expects a residential construction boom:

By 2029-30, NHSAC forecast that Australia’s annual dwelling construction will have risen to 219,000, close to its highest level in history.
