Albo’s great grovel of China has reached the level of nauseating. From The Australian:
After his big day in the Great Hall with Xi Jinping, Anthony Albanese spent most of Wednesday leading a Gough Whitlam tribute mission.
The Chinese government was delighted to assist. A huge section of the Badaling section of the Great Wall – about 80km northwest of Beijing and normally heaving with tourists – was closed off for the Australian Prime Minister, his fiancee Jodie Haydon and the travelling media, diplomatic and security entourage.
…The PM was having such a good time that, with his fiancee by his side, he joked about adding another item to the day’s agenda. “Would there be a celebrant here?”
No, but what a shame. It would have been truly fitting to see Albo marry China on his knees.
Whitlam visited China when it was an impoverished and backward-looking husk hollowed out by the Cultural Revolution
As a nation, it was zero threat to Australian interests.
Comparing that to today is crazy.
China is now the world’s second-largest economy. It is advanced in every way that matters in international relations. It is the leader of global autocracy.
It has not liberalised politically and has never been more bellicose about dominating the Asia Pacific as an illiberal hegemon.
Moreover, it is now operating the world’s largest navy and has shown a willingness to use gunboat diplomacy to achieve its ends (witness this propaganda coup following recent missile drills off Sydney).
This trip has NO comparison with Gough Whitlam or Richard Nixon. The appropriate analogy is Neville Chamberlain and his ill-fated trip to Nazi Germany in 1938 to achieve “peace in our time”.
History will remember Albo for what he is: the outstanding coward of the era and a man so hollow that foreign propaganda echoes in his empty chest.
Unless, of course, that history is written by the CCP.
Then Albo will be a titan.
