Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party is predicted to have won Canada’s federal election, according to local media.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the national public broadcaster, said the Liberals will win more of parliament’s 343 seats than the Conservatives.
A record number of Canadians voted in this election, which also became a referendum on Donald Trump.
Quite right. But is it fair to say that Trump won this election for the globalist Canadian Liberals?
Not quite.
The shift of the leader in Canada coincided with shifts in policy towards Trumpist patriots.
For instance, Carney has committed to a reduction in Canadian immigration focused on a 5% of the population cap for temporary workers and foreign students.
This is a one-third drop, though still higher than historical standards. So, it is an improvement, not a game changer.
A similar case is unfolding in Australia, in which globalist policies hostile to working-class living standards are being trimmed, not removed, while nominally left pollies use Trump as their fear-mongering outlier.
As usual, good policy is simply lost in the horse trading.
I will add one final point about Carney. Such a well-connected bloke should not be underestimated in terms of how he coordinates pushbacks against Trump’s trade agenda.
For instance, could Carney make a few calls to central banks and sovereign wealth funds to dump US Treasuries at strategic moments to curtail Trump?
Hmm.
