Increasing density won’t make housing affordable

In a new research paper from the Australian Population Research Institute (TAPRI), authors David McCloskey and Bob Birrell challenge the argument that increasing density will improve Australia’s housing affordability.

They argue that measures to “densify” in Sydney and Melbourne have not worked, and home prices continue to escalate amid very high migrant intakes.

“These densifying measures have not worked. Housing prices have continued to escalate. The supply focus has failed. Apartment approvals in Sydney and Melbourne have continued to slide into 2024″.
