Labor’s university reforms will worsen skills shortages

Late last month, the Albanese government released the Australian Universities Accord Final Report, which sets the following higher education attainment targets:

  • By 2050, the tertiary education attainment rate in Australia will have increased from 60% to at least 80% of the workforce.
  • By 2050, the proportion of Australians aged 25 to 34 with a university education will have increased from 45% to 55%.
  • Increasing the proportion of 25- to 34-year-olds with a tertiary-level vocational or technical qualification to 40% by 2050.

According to the report, 6.3 million additional occupations will require higher education by 2050, and many more students from disadvantaged backgrounds will be required to graduate to meet this target.
