Faced with mounting pressure by the US to reduce China’s role in key global supply chains, Chinese President Xi Jinping this week maneuvered to shore up trade links with the European Union.

In his first in-person summit with EU leaders in four years, Xi’s priority was attempting to nurture a stance of strategic autonomy — independent from Washington — in his European counterparts. That’s in the wake of increasing evidence that the US is succeeding in reshaping global trade and investment flows.
