Amid furore over the Albanese Government’s refusal to grant Qatar Airways more flights to/from Australia, Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb has called on the federal government to act on the Harris review “sooner rather than later”.
The review, which has been in government hands since February 2021, recommended an overhaul of how take-off and landing slots are managed at Sydney Airport, with existing rules stating that airlines retain their rights “in perpetuity” as long as they use 80% of their allocated slots.
Rivals of Qantas have long called for an overhaul of how slots at Sydney Airport are managed. Bonza and Regional Express argue that incumbent airlines Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar are blocking access to Sydney Airport and preventing them from expanding flights to capital cities.
