Australia’s visa system rorted from top to bottom

Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil is yet to publicly release the final report of an investigation she commissioned former Victoria Police chief commissioner Christine Nixon to undertake into Australia’s migration system, despite promising to release it before the federal budget.

O’Neil commissioned the report in the wake of a media investigation into human trafficking and drug smuggling, with the report concluding that “grotesque abuses” and weaknesses within the visa and migration system were allowing criminal organisations and unscrupulous operators to exploit people and make money.

“Those failures allow human traffickers and drug smugglers to enter the country, as well as exploit some of the millions of temporary visa holders who arrive by plane each year”, The Age’s report on Nixon’s inquiry reads.
