Liberal disquiet grows around Doomed Dutton

There is no good news for opposition leader Peter Dutton in the polls. On the contrary according to Bludgertrack:

Nikki Savva is from the progressive wing of the LNP and today argues that Dutton has taken a dramatic wrong turn.

According to Savva, one of Albo’s cabinet colleagues admitted to pleading that the PM be lenient with Dutton because he believed him to be Labor’s strongest asset, second only to Albanese himself, who is constantly conscious that people have had a gutful of strife and failed promises.

Albanese hasn’t acted as swiftly or boldly as some would like, which has prompted criticism from his own MPs. Instead, he has adopted a centrist stance, placed a high priority on restoring trust, solidifying Labor’s position as the preferred economic manager, and seizing the initiative on issues of national security, which the Coalition formerly controlled.

Dutton, however, tried to strengthen his position and placate his supporters by undermining the Voice referendum.

Says Savva, senior LNP colleagues from the past and present are concerned that Dutton’s strategy won’t succeed in gaining even one additional vote, especially in former LNP heartland seats now occupied by Teals.

Moreover, she says “with the budget only days away, she and others believed Dutton ensured the Voice would remain dominant, prompting the question: what about the economy, stupid?”

What about the economy, indeed? Alboflation is killing living standards at record speed:

This brings us to Dutton’s second opportunity: Albo’s maniac levels of immigration, resistance to which would win over three-quarters of the population.

And touches upon Dutton’s third strength: national security. Especially as the Labor cavalcade of groveling heads off to Beijing, He could be having a field day.

The idea that he can’t owing to the Chinese Australian vote is stupid. The diaspora is never going to vote for Dutton of the LNP but a lot of other folks will.

Bizarrely, the times suit Peter Dutton. But he has instead turned away from everything on his side to conduct a culture war completely out of step with the zeitgeist.

Doomed Dutton needs to commit political harikari with alacrity. The national interest needs a potent opposition as the world lurches on its axis toward major conflicts in our immediate region.
