Productivity Commission targets Australia’s failing federation

Treasurer Jim Chalmers says he has received the latest five-year report from the Productivity Commission (PC) on how to improve Australia’s economy, and he says he is likely to release it during March in the lead-up to the budget in May.

The five-year reports were initiated by Scott Morrison when he was treasurer, with the first released in 2017. It contained 28 recommendations, with most either the sole or joint responsibility of the states. None of the recommendations have been implemented in full.

The latest 1,000-page report contains 70 recommendations, which are likely to focus on reforms within the Federation.
