New analysis from the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) commissioned by the Greens contends that legalising and taxing cannabis could earn the federal budget upwards of $30 billion over a decade.
Under The Greens’ proposal, a new federal agency – the Cannabis Australia National Agency (CANA) – would set cannabis prices and act as an intermediary between producers and a tightly regulated retail industry.
Sales would be restricted to individuals over 18 years of age, with no restrictions on the amount individuals could purchase.
