NBN puts Australia in broadband slow lane

Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) has become a national embarrassment at this point.

The NBN cost an obscene $50 billion build and Australians pay some of the highest monthly fixed-line broadband costs in the world.

According to a report by Point Topic, Australia had the least affordable entry-level access to broadband among OECD nations in 2019, ranking 67 out of 83 countries.

The average cost of a 100Mbps plan in Australia is also higher than most other countries.

New data from Speedtest also shows that Australia’s broadband speed is slow compared to other countries.

Specifically, Australia’s fixed line (not mobile) broadband speed has fallen to 76th in the world, down from 60th position in 2019.

Australia’s fixed line broadband speed is now worse than occupied Palestine, war-torn Ukraine and bankrupt Argentina.

But at least we are beating than Mongolia, which is in one place behind!

Thankfully, Australia ranks better on mobile broadband, with the 17th fastest speeds in the world.

This helps to explain why mobile broadband is steeling market share from the NBN, threatening its viability.
