The vile AFR is rewriting economics now:
Treasurer Jim Chalmers says the Commonwealth is considering compensating the states for a decrease in windfall profits caused by a price cap on coal, as it strives to reach a deal at the national cabinet meeting on Friday.
Amid some resentment within government towards paying states to continue “profiteering” from the war in Ukraine, Dr Chalmers said if achieving agreement on price caps “required responsible time-limited contribution from the Commonwealth budget, of course, we would contemplate that”.
Honestly, in what universe do governments make “profits”? They collect revenue and reinvest it in services for the public. Often unwisely but running surpluses (if you can, we’re not) is not “profits”. The motives, mechansims, and outcomes are entirely different. This paper is intellectually bankrupt.
As the toilet paper smears us with excrement, grown-ups appear to be finding a solution:
Anthony Albanese has issued a list of demands to the NSW and Queensland governments to impose their own coal price caps, and recall parliaments to enact them, as he prepares to unveil the federal government’s crackdown on gas prices in coming days.
The Australian has confirmed that ahead of Friday’s national cabinet meeting, an initial proposal from the Prime Minister’s office and Energy Minister Chris Bowen was provided to the states late on Tuesday calling on them rather than the commonwealth to enact a coal price cap.
As the federal government ramped up pressure on the states, Treasurer Jim Chalmers left the door open to a “responsible” contribution from the commonwealth after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet demanded compensation.
Mr Albanese, who is expected to wait until parliament returns in February to legislate the code of conduct, is understood to be confident of brokering a pre-Christmas deal on both gas and coal price caps. Senior federal government sources said the code of conduct was ready to go and they were optimistic the states would come on board with coal price caps once arrangements have been negotiated by key officials.
Meanwhile, the evil gas cartel is taking one last bath in blood-soaked “profits”:
As global gas and coal prices are begin pricing a new shock for the northern hemisphere inventory-building season in H1, 2023:
Put the goddamn caps in and stop this clique of energy robber barons from trashing every Australian east of WA (including the poo at AFR).
