Melbourne on track to become nation’s biggest immigration loser

New forecasts by research company McCrindle predict that Melbourne will officially become Australia’s largest city as early as 2027.

Speaking on Melbourne radio station 3AW last week Mark McCrindle said Melbourne’s population would soon overtake Sydney’s because:

  1. Housing affordability: “house prices as steep as they are in Melbourne are significantly below Sydney”; and
  2. Livability: “for seven of the prior 10 years of this decade, we had Melbourne as the world’s most liveable city… It’s still got the lifestyle and the public transport infrastructure to sustain a bit of that growth”.

If Melbourne’s and Sydney’s population boundaries were drawn correctly, Melbourne would already be the nation’s largest city.
