The Grattan Institute has released a report which shows that federal and state governments are spending nearly $450 million a year on advertising campaigns. The report found that about $630 million of the total budget for federal advertising campaigns over the last 13 years has been spent on political self-promotion, equating to nearly $50 million a year.
The Grattan Institute has called for an independent expert panel to assess all political advertising campaigns before they are launched.
