Gas cartel kills Australia’s manufacturing sector

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) this week released quarterly employment data, which shows the healthcare & social assistance industry has comprehensively driven the nation’s jobs growth over the pandemic, while the manufacturing industry has shed jobs.

Australia added 57,800 jobs in the August quarter, led by construction (+83,500) and retail trade (+73,500), with public administration & safety (-52,500) shedding the most jobs:

Over the year to August, healthcare & social assistance led jobs growth, with 151,600 jobs added, followed by construction (+129,400). By contrast, the manufacturing industry shredded 121,500 jobs:
