Greens seek stronger federal anti-corruption commission

The Greens have flagged plans to introduce amendments to Labor’s integrity commission legislation so that it is in alignment with the crossbench bill of independent MP Helen Haines in the previous parliament. They include giving the commission budgetary independence, introducing protection for whistleblowers and lowering the bar for investigations.

The Greens’ justice spokesman David Shoebridge claims that parliament has an opportunity to create a federal integrity commission in a way that enables it to be protected from being changed by future governments that may not be so keen on scrutiny.
