A new report from the Grattan Institute has found that 7% of appointments to federal government boards are political appointees.
However, the percentage increases to 21% for positions that are considered ‘highly paid, powerful and prestigious’, and the report calls for legislation to ensure improved checks and balances on political appointments, including the creation of a Public Appointments Commissioner.
Danielle Wood, the report’s lead author, has called on the Albanese government to end the ‘jobs-for-mates culture’, and for the state and territory governments to follow its lead.
