Improve wages and conditions to fix aged care

Australia’s largest aged car body, Catholic Health Australia (CHA), wants the federal government to impose a moratorium on a condition that requires it to advertise jobs locally before it looks for staff overseas. CHA CEO Pat Garcia says the aged care sector needs overseas workers to fill a short-term lack of staff, while higher wages are needed in the longer term to meet what will be a growing demand for aged care services.

The Health Services Union (HSU) is seeking a 25% pay increase for aged-care workers in a case currently before the Fair Work Commission, with Labor’s aged care spokeswoman Claire O’Neill describing the wage claim as a “matter of justice”.
