Brisbane’s population booms, Melbourne’s busts

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released population data for Australia’s capital cities and regions for the 2021 financial year, which shows that Melbourne’s decade long population boom has well and truly busted.

Australia’s capital cities lost 25,985 people in the 2021 financial year, led by a 60,505 decline across Melbourne:

As shown in the next chart, the loss in population was caused by the sharp turnaround in immigration, with the capital cities losing 84,680 migrants in 2020-21, whereas the regions lost only 5,223 migrants:
