Regional migration doubles over pandemic

New data from the Commonwealth Bank reveals that net migration to regional Australia is double what it was two years before the pandemic.

The latest Regional Movers Index – a partnership between the Commonwealth Bank and the Regional Australia Institute (RAI) – analyses the quarterly and annual trends in people moving to Australia’s regions.

The two years of the pandemic have seen quarterly migration from capital cities to regional areas average a level that is 15% higher than what prevailed in the two years pre-pandemic. The elevated level of pandemic migration continued through to the end of 2021, despite a fall in the latest quarter.
