Omicron hitches ride to the Sunshine State

Well, this is what happens when you open borders and let in the great unwashed Victorians and Cockroaches who are seeking sun and surf:

From the ABC:

Queensland has 22 new cases of COVID-19 and 18 of those were detected outside quarantine, Health Minister Yvette D’Ath says.

The local cases spent up to a week in the community and were recorded in Brisbane’s south, Brisbane’s north, the Darling Downs, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, West Moreton and the Wide Bay. Ms D’Ath said most were acquired while in another state.

One of the positive cases visited an aged care facility in Holland Park and it has been locked down as a precaution.

There are now three confirmed cases of Omicron, two of which have been infectious while in the community.

One is a Townsville soldier who had travelled from Newcastle to Brisbane and then Brisbane to Townsville on Monday but Ms D’Ath said he had “very limited” exposure in the community.

Another is a woman from Rochedale South, whose infection was recorded yesterday. She had travelled from Newcastle and was infectious in the community on December 12 and 13

The third confirmed Omicron case is a flight crew member who spent no time in the community and is in hotel quarantine.

Expect more infections to follow as the borders remain open. And a rush to vaccination clinics as the numbers explode higher, but hopefully not as virulent as NSW and VIC.
