“Omicron”, as the WHO has classified it, is reported to have a material number of spike protein mutations. It seems likely at this point that this new variant will have spread much more than has already been identified, due to lack of sequencing in many countries, and for the well-known ability of the SARS-COV-2 virus to spread a symptomatically. Evidence of its spread within South Africa suggests that the Omicron variant has the ability to become dominant over the Beta and Delta strains.
