Today’s COVID number are out and they show that Victoria and NSW are on very different tracks.
First, Victoria recorded 1488 new locally acquired cases and two deaths:

It was Victoria’s highest daily count since the pandemic began in March last year:
And Victoria’s active cases have surged to 11,591:
The worse news is that Victoria’s Reff has risen to 1.48, meaning that case numbers will continue to grow (a Reff above 1.0 means growth):
2.089% of tests in VIC over the past 24 hours also came back positive – down slightly on yesterday following a record 71,224 tests (albeit still much lower than NSW’s tests):
The picture is the polar opposite in NSW whose COVID situation continues to improve.

The age profile of these deaths are as follows:
- One person was in their 50s
- Three people were in their 60s
- Two people were in their 70s
- Three people were in their 80s
- One person was in their 90s
Four people were not vaccinated, five people had received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, and one person had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
There have been 362 COVID-19 related deaths in NSW since 16 June 2021.
There are currently 1,005 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 202 people in intensive care, 99 of whom require ventilation.
There were 98,266 COVID-19 tests reported to 8pm last night, compared with the previous day’s total of 112,334.
The contrast in daily cases with Victoria is stark:
The same can be said about active cases (although both jurisdictions measure them differently), with Victoria’s on the rise and NSW’s on the decline:
Finally, Queensland recorded two new locally acquired COVID cases. Both are young children of a man linked with the aviation cluster and were detected while they were in quarantine. This took total active cases in the state to 25.
