Australia’s last census (2016) was associated with great controversy stemming from its “digital-first” strategy, whereby the majority of Australians would do the census online for the first time.
Then a denial of service (DOS) attack occurred on census night, resulting in the online questionnaire platform shutting down and remaining offline for nearly two days.
This resulted in #censusfail spreading throughout social media.
This year’s 2021 census is different in that Australia’s 10 million households are permitted to sign on and complete the questionnaire any time between now and 10 August (the official census date). This change was expected to alleviate traffic congestion and stress on the system.
However, an MB reader sent me the below screen capture showing that they tried to log on last night but the system failed yet again:
They only had five years to fix it.
