The rape protection racket must now be a slight favourite to win despite violently alienating the female half of the electorate. To wit:
Frank Zumbo, the long-serving staffer of federal MP Craig Kelly, has been charged with 18 offences including seven counts of aggravated indecent assault relating to allegations made by three women and a teenage girl.
The reason why was summed up again on the weekend by Labor Deputy Leader Richard Marles as he demanded Australia kowtow to Beijing urgently:
Instructing the Morrison government to do “diplomacy right”, Mr Marles was pressed to clarify what that entails. He said the government lacked “ballast” and an ability to “manage relationships”.
“We have to take responsibility for our own relationships,” he said.
“At the height of the Cold War, when tensions are far more difficult between what is going on with China and Australia now, you have relationships of substance between the Soviet governments, it can be done.
“You make the effort to reach out.”
We know what is required. China made it entirely plain the circumstances in which it will re-engage. The 14 conditions to end democracy:
Bowing to any one of those conditions, even considering doing so, is national and political suicide.
Therefore, the only conclusion that the electorate can reach is that the China corruption infecting the Labor Party runs very deep. It has poisoned corporate memory, minds, wallets, personnel and policy. Increasingly, it also discolours the brand.
It’s the last that is the most dangerous politically. The epoch ahead will be defined by conflict around China as the world splinters into a US-led liberal versus China-led illiberal trading blocs.
The Australian people will only ever choose the former. It is the one political divide that a party cannot get wrong. If the Labor brand becomes inseparable from the latter then it will never get elected so long as China remains a threat.
Which is as far as the eye can see.
