Restrictions back as new COVID outbreak hits Melbourne

Tightened COVID-19 restrictions will kick in again for greater Melbourne from 6pm tonight after the city recorded five local COVID cases linked to an Adelaide quarantine hotel.

A Wollert man contracted the Indian strain of the virus while staying in an Adelaide quarantine hotel in early May and has brought the virus into Melbourne, which has then spread to four others in the City of Whittlesea.

Under the restrictions, masks will again be compulsory in all indoor settings. Visitors to people’s homes will also be limited to five per day, and public gatherings will be capped at 30.

However, there will be no additional workplace restrictions other than having to wear a mask indoors. And the government is yet to decide whether the 30-person limit on public gatherings will effect football crowds or weddings over the weekend.

Other states have yet to impose border restrictions on Greater Melbourne. No doubt these are incoming (NSW excepted), given their past actions.
