Victorians pay $1m a day for no hotel quarantine

Since Australia’s hotel quarantine system was established by national cabinet in late-March 2020, Victoria’s hotel quarantine system has had two extended periods where it was shut to international arrivals.

The first incidence was between July and December last year following the disastrous second wave, which saw Melbourne locked down for six consecutive weeks and more than 800 people lose their lives.

The second time is the current instance, where international arrivals have been banned from arriving into Victoria since mid-February following Melbourne’s recent Holiday Inn outbreak and lockdown.
