As we know, all of Australia’s COVID-19 outbreaks after the first wave hit in late February have been caused by failures in hotel quarantine, typically involving transient security guards or cleaners.
The costs have been enormous with hard lockdowns and restrictions causing widespread economic damage, and tens-of-billions of dollars lost in economic activity.
Western Australia’s current ‘outbreak’ has sent Greater Perth into a 5-day hard lockdown, and came about after a private security guard contracted the highly contagious UK strain from a hotel quarantine guest. To add insult to injury, this private security worker had a second job as a rideshare driver, presumably because he did not earn a ‘living wage’ working in the quarantine hotel.
