Melbourne lockdown stalls jobs rebound

Callam Pickering, economist at global jobs site Indeed, has updated his weekly jobs ad series, which shows that Melbourne’s lockdown has clearly stalled new job ads.

As shown below, new job ads – i.e. those on Indeed AU for seven days or less – have plummeted in Victoria since the beginning of Melbourne’s lockdown, but are rebounding elsewhere:

In a similar vein, total job postings in Victoria are tracking 46% below last year’s trend, whereas they are down 31% across the rest of Australia:

According to Pickering:

The hiring impact of COVID-19 was larger initially in Victoria and then the recovery was slower (because restrictions remained in place for longer). Now Victoria is going backwards, while hiring across the rest of the country continues to improve.

Separate job ads data released last week by seek also shows that Melbourne’s COVID-19 shutdown is behind the stall:
