Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg have fronted the media to explain changes to JobKeeper and JobSeeker following their legislated expiry in late September.

JobSeeker payments will be slashed to $815 a fortnight from September from $1,100 currently.

Mutual obligations will also return from 4 August with those on JobSeeker required to apply for four jobs per month and by September that job search rate will increase.

However, while the $550 JobSeeker supplement will be reduced to $250 in September, those on it will be able to earn $300 without affecting the payments.

Scott Morrison also announced JobKeeper support would be reduced to $1,200 per fortnight towards the end of September with a lower payment of $750 for those working less than 20 hours per week.

Those figures will be reduced to $1000 and $650 in the March quarter.
