The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) yesterday released quarterly employment data to May 2020, which revealed that 811,100 jobs were lost over the quarter, with Accommodation & Food Services (-293,100) bearing the brunt of job losses, followed by Education (-89,300) and Arts & recreation (-87,800):
In the year to May 2020, 690,400 jobs were lost, this time dominated by ‘Other’ (-267,800), followed by Arts & recreation (-109,300) and Health Care & Social Assistance (-97,100):
Finally, the next chart plots the change in jobs since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) hit in August 2008. Over this period, 1,418,700 jobs have been created, driven by Health Care & Social Assistance (+639,200), Professional, Scientific & Technical Services (+336,900), and Education (+217,200), with Manufacturing losing the most jobs (-189,200):
