Household power bills are expected to fall after the Morrison government on Thursday approved energy market reforms to help prevent costly spikes in electricity demand.

A new wholesale demand response system is due to come in by October 2021. It will pay smelters and other big power users like heavy industry for reducing their usage during periods of peak demand, such as in a heatwave when many households turn on air conditioners.
