20 job seekers per vacancy in Australia today

As Leith noted earlier, via the ABS:

  • Total job vacancies in May 2020 were 129,100, a decrease of 43.2% from February 2020.
  • The number of job vacancies in the private sector was 111,200 in May 2020, a decrease of 45.0% from February 2020.
  • The number of job vacancies in the public sector was 17,900 in May 2020, a decrease of 28.9% from February 2020.

    The problem is, we are paying those job seekers way too much and it’s not encouraging them to compete for the scarce jobs. Take away those payments and the best will try hard to win those jobs and we’ll get some great workers at reduced prices.

    how about third or half or two thirds of those 3.5m on jobseeker who don’t really have a job to keep?

    looks like there is going to be 50 people per vacancy while probably less than one meets requirements for the jobs advertised

  3. I’m finding it quite funny to see how hard my job network provider is working to find me a job. I still can’t figure out if she genuinely cares about me getting work or whether she is desperate for her job placement bonuses which are surely close to zero with the current job market.

    How long before reality hits all these job shops and they have to start shedding jobs? Or will Scummo keep pumping them with cash to deliver even less than they did pre-covid (they did f all before).

    • Like many jobs these days, it’s probably had all the joy KPI’d out of it so she can at least show that she is hitting her activity targets.

  4. Turbocharged immigration is something that Governments got away with because approx 30 years no recession. There is no way they can spin the ‘skills shortage’ rubbish now.

    Problem is that even prior to COVID the hospitals, schools, prisons, roads and public transport were so overrun by vybrants and needed impossible amounts of investment.

    We really need to be reviewing the contribution and future earning / tax paying prospects of every single person granted PR in the last 10 years and exiting rapidly all those who will be (and have proven already to be) a net burden.

    • We need to stop granting PR to those that are offshore and haven’t proven their worth in the Australian market.

      We should only give PR to those on temp visas here doing roles experiencing genuine shortages and of a higher than average salary.

      • There are few if any job categories with genuine worker shortages. There are just a shortage of workers for the pay and conditions that businesses think they can employ someone for.

    We need an audit on how many jobs, particularly infrastructure jobs in the public sector are being done using foreign workers, foreign companies getting government contracts under recent “free” trade agreements.
    Suspect it’s significantly more than it used to be, but under the “in confidence” cone of silence…we may never know.

  6. Im guessing that the seeker to jobs ratio for those who are currently unemployed is a multiple higher than 20:1 The majority of available jobs are almost certainly only open for those with a) a certain skill level and b) most probably still employed.
    Pre virus, sister of a mate of mine who works for Bunnings, told us that 200 people applied for a mix of about 7 casual jobs going at her store.

    • shhhh, too much reality mate. We need to laugh at the unemployed. Not obtain info demanding that we change things…
      And most importantly, we need to show the unemployed’s pain as a consequence to those who may whisper that they need 4% increase in wages.
      Those franking credits ain’t going to print themselves you know.
