Speaking to Sky News this morning, Prime Minister Scott Morrison pushed back against union calls to extend JobKeeper payments beyond its legislated late-September expiry date:
“These are temporary measures and it is important that we get the economy out of ICU as quickly as we can. we can’t have Australians living on borrowed money for a protracted period of time. That dulls the economy and it doesn’t get it moving again so we can create more jobs”.
I don’t have a problem with JobKeeper not being extended provided the JobSeeker supplement is extended to provide Australians that have lost their jobs with adequate basic income support.
Australia needs an adequate social safety net to catch those displaced by COVID-19 and to ensure Australians can meet their basic living costs.
