LvO demolishes CCP on Radio 2GB

This morning I was interviewed by Luke Grant on Radio 2GB where I explained how the Australian Government should respond to China’s imposed trade war, as well as how Australian Universities have sold their soul to the Chinese Communist Party in the pursuit of international student dollars.

It’s great but I can’t believe that the media isn’t already well across all this stuff.

  2. Keep hammering it.

We shouldn’t be dealing with despots.

Remember the wheat for oil scandal? What’s the difference?

  3. Great interview – one point where I’d differ though:

Tempting as imposing tit-for-tat tariffs may be, it would cost us our key advantage we have over their governance system.

We have the rule of law and confidence of markets that people trading with us won’t be subject to arbitrary government interference. Trade disputes here are settled by independent tribunals and/or courts. In contrast, anyone trading with China needs to understand the political risk that they may be subject to penalties just because they reside in a country China doesn’t like.

If we were to impose counter tariffs we would lose this advantage and then China could retaliate with further tariffs and so on. Until one side backed down, who would be perceived as the ‘loser’.

So I actually agree with our government’s approach here. We are the mature ones, our door is always open for discussions, customers and suppliers know *our* government will not restrict their trade. When the Chinese side has finished its tantrum, we will be ready to talk.
