New job postings halve

Getting a timely read on the jobs market is difficult at present. Last week’s ABS job vacancies data for February, which recorded a small fall, was already woefully out of date as it missed the coronavirus carnage in March.

Thankfully Callam Pickering, economist at global job site Indeed, has been providing useful updates via Twitter on new job advertisements, defined as job postings less than 14 days old, which he estimates are running some 50% below last years levels:

Total job postings, which also includes those listed for more than 14 days, have also collapsed by 39%:
