Government backs commercial rent strike

The state and federal treasurers are working on a package to assist commercial tenants that have been hard hit by the coronavirus.

The package will be put to a meeting of the national cabinet on 3 April, and it is expected to feature a partial waiver and partial deferral of commercial rents. Land tax relief is also believed to be on the agenda, while state governments intend to introduce a six-month moratorium on the eviction of commercial and residential tenants:

Sources close to negotiations say the package to be put to the National Cabinet on Friday will allow for the part-deferral and part-waiver of commercial rents.
