“Dire straits” tourism industry sheds 100,000 jobs

KPMG estimates that Australia’s tourism industry has shed at least 100,000 jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic. Flight Centre CEO Graham Turner has also warned that the tourism industry is in “dire straits”, and many small tourism operators will not survive unless interstate travel restrictions are lifted soon.

Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham concedes that it will be some time before Australia’s borders are re-opened.
