Via the AFR:
A national royal commission into Australia’s unprecedented summer bushfire crisis will consider natural disaster preparedness and coordination between state and federal governments.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed the establishment of the landmark probe on Thursday, to be led by former Defence Force boss Air Chief Marshall Mark Binskin.
After consultation with state and territory leaders, the commission has been charged with considering how to improve natural disaster management coordination across all levels of government and Australia’s preparedness, resilience, and response to natural disasters.
Item one for consideration: should sitting PMs frack off to Hawaii mid-crisis.

Ah, finally a RC to tell us that it’s all nobody’s fault.
Actually this time it won’t work. The public in general has decided Scomo was woefully inadequate on the bushfires, they have locked that in their minds, and they have tuned out again.
They will not even notice the royal commission. So while its findings will be as irrelevant as ever, for once that doesn’t serve Scomo’s needs.
That won’t hurt him.
The bushfire thing has hurt him. Damage is done. This won’t undo the damage.
Peachy, don’t they usually appoint former Judges or senior lawyers to these positions? This has an unpleasant whiff about it!
I thought the various fires services etc said there was no need for an RC, plenty of inquiries in the past they can go back to.
Nothing knew here except this will give Scumo and the gov time, time for the public to get over it and forget, which we are inclined to do way to frequently, imo.
+many, the only thing a royal commision gets you is the ability to compel testimony.
There are plenty of people currently employed by various governments who can offer the advice attainable at a royal commission simply by asking, in fact it has probably already been offered and ignored.
What the RC does is push it all out into the future to be forgotten about.
This.
You can’t run a royal commission without a background in law. I can’t find any references to ANY tertiary qualifications!
Poor sod.

The govt should be banned from starting a new RC until therecommendations from the previous ones are implemented. What is the point of wasting money on these when none of the recommendations will actually be done?
It’s been going on for an eternity: pay lip service, do nothing.
but be seen to be doing something. So sinister
Bingo! They already know the answers. This is just a big PR exercise in ar$e covering.
Look, A distraction.
That is the point, and all I have to add.
” the commission has been charged with considering how to improve natural disaster management coordination across all levels of government and Australia’s preparedness, resilience, and response to natural disasters.”
but ignore the impact of climate change on the severity and frequency of said natural disasters !
and it’s beautifully circular too. Bushfires are (reportedly) responsible for half of our carbon pollution.

The morrison government has no intention of acting on the Climate Catastrophe.
To properly address it would cause mass panic, and social unrest,
We are going to be left to manage as best we can with the cascading and increasingly violent weather events.
They are going to let the nation gradually degrade and do nothing to rein in the Fosil fuel industry.

There’s only one ‘l’ in Air Chief Marshal, like one ‘l’ in General and one ‘l’ in Admiral…
I’m waiting for the combustion lobby group to change the terms of reference to exclude anything to do with the fires and blame glint off solar panels.
Recommendation 1: It’s Labor’s fault.
Recommendation 2: It’s the arsonists fault.
Recommendation 3: It’s Labor’s fault.
Recommendation 4: It’s a lack of back burning.
Recommendation 5: It’s Labor’s fault.
Recommendation 6: It’s those former fire chiefs fault for not warning us 37 years ago.
Recommendation 7: It’s Labor’s fault.
..and on it goes…
8. And look over there, how good are house prices?
To be fair Scomo appointing someone to do something is all he can do now. He dropped the ball April 19 not meeting with ex fire chiefs and failing to ramp up preparations back then.
And given his performance in Cobargo, going on hols with fires burning would do less damage than anything he might have done here. Bad look but what did he do after re returned?? Now fires are out we plan for next year and he has a role to play and has a big chequebook.
But he is doing better with the virus. For now.
