ACOSS demands Labor immediately lift Newstart

Labor has flagged plans to review the Newstart allowance if it wins the federal election, but Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) CEO Cassandra Goldie says a review is not needed and the dole should be increased by at least $75 a week immediately. She argues that the real rate of Newstart had not risen for 25 years, and there is general support among economists, business groups and unions for an increase. Trade Minister Simon Birmingham says Labor’s election costings do not take into account an increase in Newstart. From The Australian:

“We urge the next government to immediately increase Newstart and related allowances by a minimum of $75 a week to help people get through tough times and into suitable employment,” she said.
