Australian Council of Social Service CEO Cassandra Goldie has used the start of the federal election campaign to call for an increase in unemployment benefits. She says an above-average number of Newstart recipients live in seven of the 10 most marginal seats, and that an increase in the dole is a “vote-changer” for people who currently receive it or have done so in the past.
