Australian dwelling approvals dead cat bounce

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released dwelling approvals data for the month of January. At the national level, the number of dwelling approvals rebounded by a seasonally adjusted 2.5% to 14,395. The overall rise in approvals was broad-based with both detached house approvals (+2.1%) and unit & apartment approvals (+2.7%) rising.

However, in the year to January 2019, dwelling approvals fell by a seasonally-adjusted 28.6%, with house approvals down 6.6% and unit approvals crashing by 51.0%:
