As Liberals whose careers were ruined by backing Peter Dutton lashed out privately at Mr Dutton and Mathias Cormann for bungling the coup, Labor prepared to exploit what will be the government’s minority status when Parliament next sits, owing to Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to quit politics on Friday.
This will trigger a byelection in his eastern Sydney seat of Wentworth and, at a minimum, the government will be down a number for two parliamentary weeks and vulnerable to losing a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives, especially if an MP misses a division.
