…Coal plants will have to compete on a level playing field with gas peaking plants, hydro and battery storage and “demand response” for the supply of “dispatchable” energy to firm up wind and solar power in the National Electricity Market, industry sources said.

Concerns remain about the adequacy of the NEG’s carbon emissions reduction target – 26 per cent below 2005 levels – and its impact on state renewable energy targets, but the draft design has heartened the industry by easing the burden of the contracts obligation and its potential impact on existing contract markets.
